"River has a bright and caring attitude. She provided amazing support during my entire 24+ hour labor, from walking the halls of the hospital with me in early labor, to helping me ease back labor in the tub by electric candlelight and music, to helping me try different movements to get my baby unstuck and turned around in the final hours. She draws on her own experience of mindfulness and yoga, as well as childbirth and motherhood, to bring a sense of peace and ease to labor."

FAQs

What is a Full Spectrum Doula?

A Birth Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to their clients before, during and after childbirth to help their clients achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible. Doulas help with prenatal education, self-advocacy support, positional suggestions, hands-on bodywork, verbal coaching, and more. In addition this, a Full Spectrum Doula supports people with uteruses through the entire spectrum of reproduction, including fertility, pregnancy, loss, abortion, birth, and postpartum.

Evidence based studies have shown measurable improvements in childbirth with the presence of a doula. These include shorter labor, fewer interventions, lower rate of cesarean birth, reduction in forceps assisted delivery, lower healthcare costs, and more satisfying birth experiences. Set yourself up for a shorter, easier, and healthier birth!

What about my partner?

Doulas communicate and work directly with the birthing person’s partner to help support their loved one with hands-on techniques, verbal coaching, and breathwork. Doulas act as a support not only to the primary client but to the partner as well, including allowed them time to sleep, eat, and communicate with family.

Why do we need Full Spectrum Doulas?

The medical-industrial complex is rife with racism, classism, ableism, trans and queer phobias that are embedded in policies and practices. This means that many communities and individuals - such as BIPOC, queer and trans folks, and folks with disabilities - face disadvantage and oppression within the very system that is intended to support their wellness.

Full spectrum doulas show up for their clients as a support, teammate, and companion as they navigate their unique reproductive or birthing journey. They hold space for and validate the experience the client is having, and in some cases, they can help slow the fast-paced nature of the medical industrial complex down.

What does a Doula not do?

Any medical diagnosis, intervention, or procedure is outside of a doula’s scope of practice. We do not perform vaginal checks, membrane sweeps, or other internal manipulation.
